CMS and Lord of the Ants

CMS and Lord of the Ants

The other night I watched one of the NOVA series called Lord of the Ants, the story about Ed Wilson’s rise in fame as the leading world authority on Ants and how the boy would change our view on the origins of life and the structure that supports it. As a leading Entomologist, Ed Wilson has done more for science and technology then most would ever know.

Ed Wilson's dream of listing every living species on the planet is now starting to be realized. The Smithsonian, Harvard University and several other institutions are pooling their resources to create a complete Encyclopedia of Life (http://www.eol.org/), with over 1.8 million entries. Naturalists will be able to compare minute differences and to establish the evolutionary pedigrees of any form of life. For Ed Wilson, it is the culmination of a lifetime's fascination with the vast diversity of life, the "macroscope" that he always wanted to go with his microscope.

Using Acronyms

Tuesday, 29 December 2009 21:23 Written by Troy Martin

As always with every technology there are abbreviations and acronyms to describe in short hand a particular subject name. One of the hardest habits to break when speaking to people about technology is not inserting these in to our conversation. As we walk the line between the users of the systems and those behind the technology managing or creating them, there is a time and place to use them.

Writing information about a given technology and trying to stay within the boundaries of this form of communication without getting caught in the acronym game can be difficult. So there is no confusion and we can keep with the theme of this site, we keep it simple.

What is Documentum

Tuesday, 29 December 2009 21:23 Written by Troy Martin

Documentum is the company name for the Pleasanton, California based software company. Its also the name of its flagship Enterprise Content Management Software.

Documentum was founded in 1990 by Howard Shao and John Newton. Xerox Corporation funded Documentum (originally known as EDMS), but played a smaller role in its founding than most people think. Only a tiny amount of technology changed hands from Xerox Park and they made some initial introductions to some of the pharmaceuticals. In general, they made it difficult to raise money and they didn’t until October 1993.

Documentum went public on Feb 16th, 1996, on Jeff Miller’s birthday who was then CEO.

In 2003 Documentum was acquired by EMC. For additional information on EMC/Documentum please visit Wikipedia.org/wiki/documentum.

The best way to explain what is Documentum is to think of it, as a collection of specialized software tools and products to manage this content.

Transition to a new platform

Transition to a new platform

The Documentum 4 Dummies project has a new home. Quietly in the background we have been building and moving to a fresh new site. We have ditched WordPress and are now hosting the site via Joomla! It is ironic that we should be building the site on an open source CMS. But as you know EMC's Documentum is a proprietary set of products and they don't take kindly anyone using it unless they have a valid license. And as we all know Documentum is not for the faint in heart or the pocketbook!

Not only do we have a new site, we are focusing on a new direction. To build a viable community of interested people looking to share idea's and knowledge about Documentum. As of writing this, the original Documentum 4 Dummies site has registered over 162,000 hits this year. And the amazing thing is we have not updated any of the information in months as we prepared to move to the new platform.
